<![CDATA[Press Release: CWBA Donates $2,000 to Legal Aid]]>Tue, 24 Mar 2015 22:17:42 GMThttp://cwbar.org/home/press-release-cwba-donates-2000-to-legal-aidPicture
Longview, WA – The Cowlitz Wahkiakum Bar Association recently donated $2,000 to the Cowlitz Wahkiakum Legal Aid program. The donation will go into the general operating fund, which will allow the leadership at Legal Aid to use it for the agency’s most pressing needs. Legal Aid assists people with low incomes in the areas of family law, landlord-tenant law, veteran’s issues, elder law and others.

The local bar has been making regular donations to Legal Aid since 1999. “We are pleased to make this donation to Legal Aid to promote access to justice,” said bar association President David Nelson. “Our attorney members also volunteer 400-500 hours each year to help clients referred to them by Legal Aid. We are proud to serve our community.”

Sixteen years ago, local attorneys and the bar association formed our community Legal Aid program. Today, Legal Aid serves over 300 new clients per year, and operates with only two part time staff. “Legal Aid in our community happens because local attorneys are generous with their time and money to provide pro bono help to our low income clients,” said Lori Bashor-Sarancik, Legal Aid Program Coordinator.

Cowlitz-Wahkiakum Legal Aid is also supported by funds from The Legal Foundation of Washington, The United Way, The City of Longview, The Washington State Bar Association, private foundations, and individual donors. Legal Aid is always looking for volunteers. Services can be accessed by calling the CLEAR Hotline for Washington State at 1-888-201-1014, or by calling the local office at 360-425-2579.
